# JavaScript

JavaScript is the programming language of the web, standardised as ECMAScript (ECMA-262) by Ecma International. Browsers compile it to run interactivity, but excess JavaScript delays rendering and hurts Interaction to Next Paint. Using it sparingly — as this site does — is a performance decision, not a lack of capability.
