# Core Web Vitals & performance

German title: Core Web Vitals & Performance

> Core Web Vitals measure loading (LCP ≤ 2.5 s), responsiveness (INP ≤ 200 ms) and visual stability (CLS ≤ 0.1) at the 75th percentile. Google uses them in its ranking systems but gives no weight and stresses that good scores do not guarantee a top ranking.

## Facts

- **LCP:** good ≤ 2.5 s
- **INP:** good ≤ 200 ms
- **CLS:** good ≤ 0.1
- **Measurement:** 75th percentile, mobile and desktop separately
- **Ranking:** used by Google systems; weight not verified

## The three metrics

Core Web Vitals and “good” thresholdMetric Measures Good
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) Load time of the largest visible element ≤ 2.5 s
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) Responsiveness to interactions ≤ 200 ms
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) Visual stability ≤ 0.1

## How it is measured

web.dev describes measurement at the 75th percentile of page views, separately for mobile and desktop. A page passes when all three targets are met. INP became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024 and replaced First Input Delay (FID).

## Ways to measure: field and lab data

- Field data (real users): Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) as the data source for PageSpeed Insights and the Search Console Core Web Vitals report; the web-vitals JavaScript library for your own monitoring.
- Lab data (simulated environment): Lighthouse measures LCP and CLS, not INP; Total Blocking Time (TBT) serves as a proxy. Chrome DevTools measures LCP, INP and CLS in the lab.

According to web.dev, lab measurements do not replace field measurements.

## Role in Google Search

Google writes: “Core Web Vitals are used by our ranking systems” and recommends good values for success in Search. It also states that great page experience is more than the scores alone, that good scores do not guarantee a top ranking, and that chasing a perfect score purely for SEO may not be the best use of time. Google does not state how much weight Core Web Vitals carry in ranking.

## Not verified

The weight of Core Web Vitals in ranking is not verified. Classifying the web-vitals library as field data is an inference from the description on web.dev.

## Questions

### Are Core Web Vitals a ranking factor?

Google states that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems. It does not state their weight, and good scores do not guarantee a top ranking.

### Which metric replaced FID?

INP, since 2024.

### When does a page pass?

When LCP, INP and CLS are in the “good” range at the 75th percentile.

### What do I measure with?

Field data comes from CrUX (PageSpeed Insights, Search Console) and the web-vitals library; lab data from Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools. Lighthouse does not measure INP and uses TBT as a proxy.
